Myopia Control/Ortho-K Lenses

p16

Myopia (nearsightedness) is a common visual condition in which distant objects become blurry. Children usually first notice this condition when things in the classroom in the distance are harder to see, causing squinting and sitting closer to the board. The stronger the myopic prescription, the more stretched the eyeball is. The stretching of the eyeball may increase the risk of certain eye diseases, such as cataracts and retinal detachment.

Currently there are multiple treatment options to help control the progression of myopia. Treatment options include the use of eye drops, soft contact lenses worn in the daytime and rigid contact lenses worn at nighttime (ortho-k lenses).

Orthokeratology (Ortho-k) is a procedure that uses specialty contact lenses to temporarily reshape the cornea. The ortho-k lenses are worn during bedtime and flattens the cornea. Upon waking up, vision will be clear without the use of glasses. Although orthokeratology is primarily used to help slow down the progression of myopia, adults can benefit from the procedure as a non-surgical way to correct the vision. If you or your child is interested in ortho-k lenses, please contact our clinic for an assessment.
